Brighten a day and lift someone's spirits

Everyone has moments when they could use an encouraging word. It could be because of a life–changing event like divorce, death of a loved one or a serious illness. Or it could be for those everyday things like a rough patch at work or a bout of the blues.

Unfortunately, it can be hard for us to reach out because we're afraid of saying the wrong thing, or just don't know what to say.

It's important to remember that even the littlest thing—like a card that simply says "hi!"—tells someone that you care and you're thinking about them. And isn't that a wonderful thing to give someone?

Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Begin by telling the person why you're writing. Be straightforward and make sure your message is easy to understand. If you?re comfortable writing unpleasant words like "divorce" or "sick," go ahead and do it. If not, just let say you're thinking of him or her at this "difficult time."
  • Communicate caring. Let the person know you're sorry about what's happening, or simply that she's on your mind and you hope everything's okay.
  • Write something to brighten her day. Give a compliment, mention something positive—anything that creates a light, warm and uplifting tone.
  • Offer your support. Make yourself available for assistance (physical or emotional) such as running errands, cooking dinner or just coming over for some one-on-one time. Be specific about how you'd like to help—and be sure you follow–through.
  • Add an extra dose of cheer. Jot down an inspirational quote or Bible verse, or send a small gift like a magazine or a candle in her favorite scent. Or offer to take her out for a relaxing activity like a massage or manicure.
  • Don't forget the close. Wrap up your note by reminding the person how much you care and that you're thinking of her.

And remember, a lot of situations that call for a cheery note are ongoing. So stock up on all sorts of cards—some starting at 99 cents—and send one every time you think a day–brightener is needed. And really, any day is a good day to let someone know they're on your mind.
